THE CLASSIC PERIOD

First Phase Chief's Blanket

First Phase Chief's blankets were woven by the Dine' during the Classic Period from approximately 1800 through 1850. The design typically consists of alternating blue, ivory, black and brown or maroon stripes. The stripes running through the midline of the blanket and along its edges are typically wider than the remainder.

Second Phase Chief's Blanket

Second Phase Chief's blankets were woven by the Dine' during the Classic Period from approximately 1840 through 1870. The design of these blankets incorporates rectangular, red motifs into the stripes seen in First Phase Chief's blankets.

Third Phase Chief's Blanket

Third Phase Chief's blankets were woven by the Dine' during the Classic Period from approximately 1860 through 1880. During this phase, Chief's blankets became more elaborate, with the addition of stepped or serrated, diamond-shaped motifs both within the center of the blanket and along the edges of the stripes.
